  • Autumn 2018 Kinmana Farm News

Our family was invited to a “Behind the Scenes at Monarto Zoo” day to discover the valuable on-ground works being done to protect the smallest Mallee Land animal, the Mallee Emu Wren. The Murray Mallee Local Action Planning Group (MMLAP) hosted the day and we enjoyed the opportunity to see the valuable contribution we have made by the tree planting on Kinmana Farms, (Sunset-Billiatt parks wildlife corridor).

    MMLAP Autumn news

Mallee Emu Wren weighs 5-6 grams

In April, we hosted an Urbrae Student for work experience. Heidi participated in the Sommerlad chicken hatching, general farm duties, and joined in with us at the annual Karoonda Farm Fair.

In May, we hosted a Tafe SA student for work experience. Gideon came to us from Eden Hills to gain tractor-driving experience, and proved to be a very capable young man, a real help, just after some much needed rain to start our soil preparation.

Two more purpose built chicken sheds have been built. They are well insulated, fox proof and
house the chickens during the night. During daylight hours, they are all free to roam, and enjoy the mallee sunshine!

We’ve begun the task of Sommerlad hen and rooster breeding birds selection. This step is a very important process in keeping the genetics of the Australian heritage table bird continuing.
